About

What is Network Buddies?

A friendly, cartoon-style website that teaches complete beginners how computer networks work.

Who is it for?

  • Complete beginners with no IT background (age 12 and up), and grown-ups without a technical background
  • Students just starting an IT or networking course
  • Teachers looking for classroom material

We assume you only know how to use a phone and a web browser. You don't need to know anything else.

Why do we keep the English names?

Names like MAC Address, Router and DNS are what you will see in real documentation, on real equipment and in exams, all around the world. Learning them from day one makes the jump to a proper course much easier. The first time a term appears in a lesson, we explain it in one plain sentence. (On the Chinese version of this site, each term is written in English followed by its Chinese name.)

Are the addresses in the examples real?

No. All the examples use addresses that are set aside especially for teaching and documentation, so they never point to a real organisation or device:

  • Public IP: 203.0.113.x, 198.51.100.x, 192.0.2.x
  • Private IP: 192.168.x.x
  • IPv6: 2001:db8::
  • MAC Address: 00:00:5E:00:53:xx
  • Web address: example.com

Are the analogies always accurate?

Analogies help you understand, but none of them is perfect. That's why every lesson has a section called "Where the Analogy Breaks", which honestly explains how the analogy differs from a real network.
